Social environment and social structure
(rural and urban areas, social groups, networks)
Researchers at INSS are not limited to theoretical approaches in description of social structure; they also conduct empirical research which allows them to understand more fully social formal and informal structure and networking of certain social groups. Based on these researches a number of articles have been published.

Ethnos, identity and migration
INSS researchers have participated in more than 10 projects on these themes focusing on strategies and motivations of migration, problems of integration in host countries and reintegration after returning home, sociocultural problems, etc. One of these initiatives conducted by INSS is the Study of the impact of global financial and economic crisis on migration flows and remittances, conducted for German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ). Much attention has also been paid to investigation of migrants strategies of coping in crisis in host and home societies/communities.

"Armenian Migrants in Germany”
Our researchers have participated in projects in border areas focusing on economic and social life, gender and ethnic relations and other themes related to the concrete region and community.
In collaboration with CISR INSS organized implementation of research school on Armenian-Iranian borderland, with participation of researchers from Georgia, Russia and Armenia.
This research area includes studies of female participation (in economic, political, and civil contexts), gender socialization. The field has been supplemented by research on gender in power relations, the gender aspect of migration processes, gender relations in rural communities.

There are two research directions in the sphere of education: education policy research aimed at assessment of quality of education and the formation of legal consciousness through education process. Our special niche in the education research arena is assessment of legal and civic education with development of policy recommendations for further improvement. Among them is nationwide survey on law-consciousness of pupil and assessment of civic education efficiency in the high schools.

INSS researchers are involved in the research on the Armenian civil society development trends, with a special focus on civil society organizations (CSOs), including CSO capacities, participation in policy-making. One of the INSS researches is the Case Studies on CSO engagement in policy-making in Armenia, implemented with the support of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.
